We found water. We have water. We used ancient irrigation (Anasazi Indians) techniques to pipe water from the Colorado. Its called the CAP, look it up. Regardless, we have built underground reservoirs as well, that gets water diverted and stored in case of problems. Technically, in the case of a massive drought, we are better off than most areas of the nation simply because we are already prepared.

I remember living in Chicago and we had a 5 week drought one summer, and many suburbs were already imposing bans on watering lawns and washing cars at home. What will happen if you guys have a massive, prolonged drought? Here in AZ we are in the midst of a 700 year drought, and are using LESS water than we did in the 1950's, despite having 10 times the population. We do our part to conserve and share. What are you guys doing?

The govt does. And if crap hits the fan, it will be diverted if need be. It most likely will never come to that, but if it does, there will be nothing you can do to stop it. So you can either share, or expect a MASSIVE influx of people from all over the nation relocating there to have water. I'm talking 10s of millions of people. Take your pick.

Cut a deal with the Mexican gov, for about 25 miles of pipeline through their land to the Gulf of California.
Build one of these:

Problem solved.

Places like PHX are not "ruining" the West. We have the most strict water conservation efforts in the nation, far and away. Despite our population being over 5 million, we are using LESS water than in the 1950's. Most places flat out ban grass and non-native flora. Golf courses and car washes use recycled water. Many places collect rain and use it for crops and plants. We haven't "wrecked" anything, but in fact respect it immensely and do all we can to ensure we have plenty.

Here in PHX we have absolutely no need to do that. We take care of our own.

There are limits to CAP and to the maximum effectiveness of other methods, especially based on projected population growth and less water coming from the Rockies.

Yes, it is done here sometimes as a proactive measure, not because our water sources are close to being bone dry. Arguably, a smarter way than some western locales choice to ban watering of lawns by homeowners but fully permit golf courses to water with little restrictions.

Btw, my comments were not pointed specifically at PHX but more broadly toward the west in general where population growth is critically affecting the environment (Hi, Cali).

Alternatively, let the entire southwest die.

That statement conveys a false sense of animosity. I am quite calm and comfortable with the idea of the western half of the United States burning to death, dying of thirst, or being lost to any of the volcanoes or fault lines that render an already uninhabitable wasteland that much more dangerous.

Phoenix, for example, simply should not exist. Strict water conservation efforts in Phoenix are like matches in an avalanche.

Finally, it does not matter whether or not the wasteland states want access to the Great Lakes. It would literally be cheaper to build a bike path to Venus. Moving water is and always has been humanity's most expensive endeavor for the simple reason that we cannot beat physics.

Either which way, wildfires will have reclaimed the desert from the American Southwest (and much of the west coast) long before it comes to this.
