As someone who's spent most of their life in the northeast I'm not particularly afraid of winter or snow, I am just curious as to how much harsher the winter cold is in chicago as opposed to the east coast cities?

It really depends where in the northeast. New England I'd think is probably comparable. Mid Atlantic, I would expect it to be noticeably harsher. I'm in Philadelphia and no question we've had it far easier - basically just *one* morning of snowfall all winter which didn't last more than a few days. It really is crazy in comparison.

Chicago is a bit colder and has considerably less snow than the NE.
