I was never aware of any such rule applying to all of Western, but rather to the section that runs through West Town.

The area near the Western Blue line stop just west of Western is just fine (south of Armitage). It is the most gentrified part of Logan Square, and has tons of new or gutted condos. Some of my best friends live on Moffat two blocks west of Western and have been there since 1999 in a large loft building. When we went to vist them in '99, it was a little rougher, but now it's actually quite nice. They have never had any trouble with crime whatsoever, but some of their neighbors have. But I really can't say that being a couple of blocks east of Western would make any difference.

I've been to Arturo's and Lazo's at 3:00 a.m. completely wasted when the neighborhood was much worse, and have not had problems. Margie's Candies has one of the best Chocolate Malts in town. And the Western Blue Line stop is pretty nice because it's the last stop you can usually get on the train (I've stood at Damen too many times and watched crowded trains pass by with no room to even squeeze on). And you really can't beat the Map Room for their craft brew and import selection (comparable only to the Hop Leaf here in town). It's a decent area to live, though many of the residential streets lack the historic charm of Wicker Park.

That was my point exactly "Lookout Kid". That particular area is a bit the same on both sides of Western. Maybe if you start looking > 4 blocks both sides then there is actually a marked difference.

And BTW, if we want to get technical, WEST TOWN stops at Bloomingdale to the North (officially). The area they are looking at is technically and officially Logan Square. So maybe that is why West of Western does not necessarily apply? Got your point Drover though...just being a harda$$

Logan Square is no walk in the park either. Just because a location is in Logan Squre does not mean it is a great area. We have been over this many times in this forum.

Very true. Also because it is Logan Square does not mean it is a bad area either. Logan Square is one of the few Chicago neighborhoods you can say this about. There is such a huge contrast between far East Logan Square and far West Logan Square. Interesting indeed.

Default 2 blocks east of western is better than 2 blocks west at armitage

Phl Gd,

I agree with you on most of your posts as a fellow urban pioneer. However, I believe the condos two blocks east of western at armitage are more expensive than those just two blocks west of western anf the taxes are much higher. I know fogelson well who is doing the condos (bucktown station). At western and winnebago. I really like that area and margie's is a plus.

Drover,

I don't think the area is that along milwaukee northwest of there, but it is all relative. I am used to humboldt park.

Drover,

Sorry. I meant to say "the area is not that bad". Blackberry is covenient for using this forum even in traffic but not for grammar.

I see the druggies walking up and down milwaukee from time to time as well as the hookers, but have never had any problems with them. We have some of them stop in at my church in Logan Square from time to time as well as the food bank we sponsor.

I would walk milwaukee at any hour of the day, any day in the year as long as I am sober. After a few drinks I might exercise more caution and just take a cab, but this is true even in gentrified areas such as Lakeview.
