As I stated in an earlier thread, I'm moving my family from NYC to Chicago. I've spent some time on this site reading the various threads and wanted to know if anyone who has lived in NYC relocated to Chicago and what are the similiarites and differences? We're moving because of the obvious- cost of living, lack of affordable childcare options and being closer to family, but I worry about diversity, as I've read on some threads, job opportunities (I work for a large media company in NYC and I do marketing for them) and I guess the "what is really bad?" ratio. Meaning, as a young black couple with 2 kids, I want to live in a neighborhood where we are well represented and understand that the term "bad neighborhoods" are relative but am not interested in moving my family from one neighborhood here in NYC that is nice but lacking to another neighborhood in another state that is same. For that, I'll stay here! I hope that you can help me. I currently live in Mount Vernon, NYC, but before that lived in Harlem and I grew up in the Bronx. All of these areas are residentially segregated as anyone who has lived in NYC would know, because although having sections of all three of these places that are nice to live, because they are predominately AA, the schools are awful, and the crime is higher and the resources are limited unlike Manhattan and parts of the 'burbs that are less diverse but twice as expensive. But, because of the cost of living here it is the best areas for our money (and my husband I make over $140,000 combined.) In a nutshell, I'm not uprooting my family to settle into a neighborhood that reminds me of home- for that I'll stay home! So, if you guys can give me comparable infomration of neighborhoods based on the neighborhoods here, I would be truly grateful! What is like Riverdale or Brooklyn Heights, or White Plains or even the "new" Harlem? I want those neighborhoods! Any response will be helpful! These are the areas that are great to live in- but truly unaffordable here in NYC.

Please search this forum. There are a zillion threads on NYC v. Chicago (that also compare neighborhoods, as well as the cities) and another zillion on the segregation (or lack there of in Chicago)- we really don't need to open up that debate again.

I moved form Yonkers to Hyde Park so I'm prejudiced. But, I consider Hyde Park, Oak Park or Evanston your best bets. Stay within that ring or you are getting outside of the 'White Plains' limit; you are moving upstate.
