I have NEVER heard anything positive about Comcast service, especially if you don't also have their cable tv. Go with ATT DSL, you can't beat the price or service. They have promotional plans available sometimes for as little as $15 a month or so. I've been using it for 3 years now, now problems at all. Is it blazingly fast? Well, I can download a web page in 5 seconds or so, music downloads within a minute. Maybe I'll save a few seconds with Comcast, but it's not worth paying 2 or 3 times as much, especially since I don't watch tv.

The thing about DSL is it all depends on how far you are from their switch thing. The farther you are, the slower it goes. I have lived places where the DSL was quite fast and others where it was painfully slow.

I can't imagine ever being too far from the switch anywhere in Chicago. That's more of a problem in less densely populated areas, particularly exurb-type places.

I've had both Comcast and ATT. Comcast was way faster, but it has gone out a few times, a problem I'ver never had with ATT. (I'm in West Roger's Park on a street where the ATT download tops out at 1.5 mps....this is probably low for most of the city, however and I do know that ATT has packages where download speeds reach 3 mps and 6 mps.)

Thanks!
there is this company, Globax - Global Exchange
try contacting them, and if they can provide High speed in your building, try them.
They have buildings downtown where they provide 30Mbits per customer!!!
the prices are great also!

i recently pay $20 a month for 3Mb down and 1Mb up, plus basic cable
You can't beat that!

Default Internet Provider: AT&T or RCN?

I live downtown and my building has both AT&T DSL and RCN Cable Internet options. I've had RCN internet this past year it hasn't been the greatest. I'm not sure if it's the wiring in the building or the service in general. I do have the option for AT&T DSL now too.

Any thoughts or opinions on either service provider?

What do you do or want to do on the internet ?? If you primarily browse, surf and email , DSL is fine..if you can check w/ others in the building to see what speed you're getting.
If you're more into things like streaming video, do I/T work at home, or more intense online usage ( Skype Video conferencing), there's really no substitute for broadband ... I had RCN for a few years ..paid for the megamodem service and never had any issues w/ speed and reliability, and their broadband tech support was actually knowledgable ..
