Hi All,

I am a single guy interested in reducing the commute from City to work at EGV but at the same time be close enough to be able to get to the city quickly! Would appreciate your comments and advice. Budget: $1,000 - $1,500. Staying close to public transportation is another priority.

Thanks!

Elk Grove and Chicago technically border each other, so it's possible to be close to work and maintain access to Chicago's public transportation. I would recommend living near one of the outer stops on the CTA Blue Line train (anywhere from Jefferson Park through the Cumberland or Rosemont stops) since that will be the best compromise between relatively easy access to EGV and access to Chicago's mass transit network. The Blue Line runs 24/7 and connects to a number of bus lines that do likewise and run to nightlife areas (Belmont and Lawrence, most notably). Plus the Blue Line provides direct access to one of the premier nightlife areas (Bucktown/Wicker Park).

Check out some places near Cumberland between Higgins and Irving Park in Chicago. That is the best option IMO. The buses that connect with the Blue Line do not run all night out there, but if you have a car you can easily get onto 90 and get farther into the city in off peak times.

Your best bet is to live within walking distance of the Blue Line that still places you in good proximity to drive or take the CTA/Pace to Elk Grove... Which would mean near the Cumberland, Harlem, or Jefferson Park stops on the Blue Line. Living in Rosemont is almost ruled out, because it does not have many rental units and the ones it has are a little less than desirable for many people. But maybe you would like it. Other than some apartments near River Road and Higgins, there is not much going on for a few miles rental wise around Rosemont.
