Hello,

I'm lecturing part-time at Northwestern next year and commuting from Indiana to stay during the week. Can anyone recommend a neighborhood close to Evanston that is reasonably priced- accessible by public transportation, around $500-550 per month to rent a room, and is safe for a single female (my class ends in early evening). The neighborhood on craigslist that keeps appearing is Rodgers Park. Any thoughts?? Is there another popular housing guide that Chicagoans use besides Craigslist? Thank you very much!

Rogers Park is not bad. You may be able to find a place in Edgewater though it may be a little more expensive.

Apparently, the section of Rogers Park closest to the lake is better...

If you live in either Rogers Park or Edgewater, there is a free shuttle for NU employees that you can use to commute between the Evanston campus and the Loyola red line stop.

If you're looking to rent a room, you could also try airbnb.

If you just want a room in a roommate situation, your budget may be enough to actually live *in* Evanston. South Evanston (south of Dempster Street) is very nice - integrated, middle class, historic - except for a few blocks near Howard Street.

You may want to look into Skokie, IL it is just as close to NWU. There is transportation that will take you there and back. it's called the Skokie Swift CTA Station. They also have public parking for cars for about $3 a day. Either location you choose will be about 35 minute ride to the University.

Just do a google search like this, "are there any buses that take you from skokie il to northwestern university?"
