The newspapers say Chicago has about 4,300 of water mains. 20 percent of that would be 860 miles. Assuming all of those 860 miles need to be replaced very soon9which is what the city says), at 40 miles per year, it will take 21.5 years. By then there probably will be another 1000 or so miles that need to be replaced!

Looks like the mayor need to step up to the plate and get this fixed a wee bit fast than 20 years!

If the system has fundamentally held together for over 100 years, I'm not sure what the hurry is. 20 years seems like a reasonable time frame under the circumstances.

There are a lot of water problems (pressure and bursting mains that are usually not as dramatic but sometimes are as reported on like the one yesterday)in the western part of Jefferson Township and the entire Hyde Park and Lake View Townships in the city.

The annexed areas are the ones that have major problems.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. I work on Montrose, a block west and across the street from where that break happened, and we got lucky that there was no flooding in our office. The crews have been there day and night working hard. Unfortunately, beans and bagels' basement was totally flooded and a couple of buildings' foundations will have to be redone, but at least no one was hurt.
