Honestly, anybody "striking up a conversation" at 3AM in a city park has problems...
Obviously there are folks of every race that are up to no good at that hour. If these folks were trying to buy or sell (or even 'share') something as innocuous as beer or regular cigarettes there is a good chance somebody got upset. Of course the stabbing is horrible, but the whole scenario -- some kind of melee in a public park four hours after it was closed, suggests some very messed up judgement...
