My husband and I are considering this as well. We're wanting to live in Chicago and for me to commute to Merrillville. Does anyone have any updated opinions about this?

It is definitely doable if you are staying south of the Loop. Driving out to Merrillville in the snow would be a nightmare though. NW Indiana gets pummeled compared to the city.

The South Loop has gotten signficantly more costly than it was just a few years ago.
Other desirable areas south of downtown like Hyde Park / Kenwood have also seen prices climb.

Prices are not quite so oppressive in Morgan Park / Beverly, though you would much farther from both the hot spots that folks looking for urban living seem attracted too...

The cost of having a car in Chicago has also risen dramatically. Factoring the costs for garage, city sticker, likely automated traffic tickets. tolls on the SkyWay, high insurance costs, and similar factor (but assuming you get fuel in Indiana, where it is much cheaper) you would still be spending thousands more per year compared to living in NWI and coming in after work or on weekends..
