I'm not following the thread, but wondering, why didn't you mention the Target at 2656 N Elston?

Well it is not in a "yuppie" area either. But it is closer to more than most (except the south loop store) that I can think of off the top of my head, but it is still not
very convenient to get to for lots of people in "yuppie" areas.

Well, um...yeah...that's part of the fun of running for election in Chicago.
My point being that you have a one party system.

Any type of employment for these people is a good thing. Unlike Taco Bell and McDonald's that offer full-time hours the problem Walmart and other big box retailers has is majority of employee's are only part-time. There are numerous Walmart / big box employee forums that discuss these issues.

But like I said any type of employment is a good thing.

The unemployment rate for Masters and Doctorates is 4-6%, but, the employment rate increases through BA, trade school and high school. to the 20 somethings with no diploma and an umployment rate fo 30-35 percent. To these folks even a part time job at Walmart is better than no jpb.

Yeah, but with two different (but similar in action parties) you at least have them on each other and it keeps corruption down IMO.

Just so you know, zoning for grocery at western and madison should be board approved in the next few weeks. They are hoping to break ground in Sept but this may be optimistic. That food desert at California and Madison is getting smaller.

Look, the fact of the matter is is that a majority of Chicago relies and is dependent on big box department stores, and yes that includes both Lincoln Park yuppies and people in middle/lower classes alike. Please give me the name of five "mom and pop" stores that remain on the north side that you would even blink an eye at if they were to just disappear one day. Now compare that with the Target on Elston or the Best Buy on North Ave for instance, and just imagine what the difference would be. Though 21 stores is ridiculous, the presence of Wal-Mart won't change anything in Chicago. If anything, it'll just bring more jobs to the city that local places like Dominicks and Jewel refuse to give out. Good riddance if you ask me.
