I'm actually from Texas but moved to Milwaukee to attend Marquette University and just ended up staying after college.

There is so many people here that are intimidated to go to Chicago, and that goes for suburban Milwaukeeans, they even feel intimidated to come into downtown Milwaukee. They worry about parking, traffic, crime, getting lost.

In my words they are just afraid, it's out of their comfort zone. When I first got my drivers license I drove all around Milwaukee then I got bored so I used to just drive down to Chicago to get to know the city.

Hmmm... I lived in Milwaukee for a few years, and never met anyone like this. Most Milwaukeeans I knew came down to Chicago quite regularly, in fact.

Don't worry too much, edgewater is one of Chicago's safer communities, and since your black you don't need to worry about getting gooned.

What about 1251 West Thorndale? From the description it is everything I am looking for, but what about the area in terms of crime and amenities ?

1251 W. Thorndale would be just west of Broadway, which is the main street in Edgewater. You would have the Thorndale el stop less than a 5-minute walk away. As someone mentioned above, that stop can be a little sketchy and in particular there often seems to be a lot of young guys loitering on the sidewalk near the entrance.

Being west of Broadway would keep you away from the highest crime area of Edgewater, which is east of Broadway. That's not to say that your area would be crime-free, but I know plenty of single women who live in that area who have had no problems.

In terms of amenities, you'll find a lot on Broadway, including:

-Lots of restaurants (If you like Ethiopian food in particular, or learn to like it, you will be in heaven).

-A large Dominick's supermarket one block north

-Dry cleaners, Walgreens, and a small public library, all within a few blocks.

If you want safety and amenities, I agree with the person above who suggested looking at Andersonville, which is a section of Edgewater, centered on the intersection of Clark and Foster. You still have easy access to the el, but you have tons more retail options.

$1100 should give you a lot of options, but it would generally get you more bang for your buck the further you are from downtown.

You ever think of Wicker Park/Bucktown? Very safe areas and it only takes me 15 min to get to the loop in the morning on the blue line.

OP was looking for diversity. I think they'd be much better of in Evanston/Uptown/Edgewater or even Albany Park then in WP for that specifically.
