I saw this on the national news this morning. It sounds far-fetched. But we are talking about the CPD here, and unfortunately their past reputation allows us all to wonder what they are capable of. But the Guardian is also a little off-the-wall sometimes, so the skepticism flows in both directions here.

If you know any decent criminal defense attorneys that work in Chicago for the kind of people that CPD believes might have "information pertaining to past or future criminal activity" they can tell you that such procedures have ALWAYS been part of the "intelligence operations" of the department.

If somebody called central booking and said "I am Bob Smith's lawyer, I want to speak with him." BUT THEY are not really a lawyer at all, just some thug checking up Bob Smith who might be ratting them out THAT would not be effective "intelligence gathering" it would be a way to Bob Smith killed if he was released...
The bad guys in Chicago are remarkably clever that way. The cops have work a little harder to stay ahead of the bad guys...
