i'm confused. let me get this straight - to properly dispose of one's christmas tree, it can only be done next sat, 1/12, at the nearest park? ugh. mine is all prickly and dry now. there are really no other options? only that day? that's ridiculous.

I will try to look for more options. I agree it is very ridiculous. People think Daley is such a "green" mayor,he is not, it is all window dressing. He and the city government get awards for being "green" when they are only doing a fraction of what could be done.

I think at one time they would send trucks that had the wood choppers down the alleys and turn the trees to chips while they drove around. The city would tell people what week they would be coming in the area. Why they cannot do that now, I have no idea.

I already see many trees in alleys next to garbage cans. Guess what? They will all go to the landfill. Good job being "green" Mr. Mayor.

cbs2chicago.com - Christmas Tree Recycling Expected To Surpass 2006

According to this article from last year,12000 trees were recycled in 2006 after the 2005 Christmas. I do not know what the numbers were last year, but 12,000, 20,000, 30,000 out of a city with almost 3 million people is pretty weak. I wonder how many trees per year go to landfills? It has to be hundreds of thousands.

And they degrade right back into the Earth within a year or so, so whats the problem? Ever been to a landfill? It's made up of garbage and Earth. The trees degrading back into soil would actually be good for the landfill as their soil they generate as they degrade are used as fill. Also ever see how much power is inside a garbage truck?

Recycle it instead. Drop it off at a location listed below from
Saturday, January 3—Friday, January 16 to be chipped and turned into mulch.
Free mulch* will be available to residents for pick up beginning Friday, January 9.

Count me for one who doesn't see the problem with a tree going to a landfill. It's a dead tree, not plastic.
