Family-friendly Neighborhoods

My family and I may be moving to the area this summer. I am currently working with a teaching program that may place me in this area for the 2008-2009 school year. As a CPS teacher, I would have to live in the city limits of Chicago. Possible areas of placement are Chicago, Houston, Jacksonville, Charlotte, and Miami.

We are a family in our 30’s with three daughters ages 8, 5, and 1. We currently live in Indiana, but we have lived in Jacksonville, FL, Melbourne, FL, and Hampton, VA in previous years. We are looking for a family-friendly area / neighborhood with affordable housing. At first, we will want to rent a home of 3-4 bedrooms 1.5 + bathrooms, preferably 1600 + SF. Rent range preferably less than $1500. We currently live in a 4 BR, 2.5 BA on 3 acres with an in ground pool. Of course, we understand this is not going to be the case there, at least not renting at first.

Any suggestions on neighborhoods, schools, areas that are best for our family?

Thanks to all!

I would look on the far Northwest Side if I were you. There are some very family-friendly areas closer in, but they are far from affordable. Any place that's affordable within the city limits is going to have at least a minimal gang presence, but the Northwest Side has among the lowest crime rates in the city.

The community areas of Jefferson Park, Norwood Park, Dunning, Forest Glen, O'Hare would be my top choices if I had a family.

I have only been a Chicago resident since last April, and although I have been visiting family since I was a child, I'm not an expert. But I now live in the area called North Center (Irving/Damen/Lincoln--just north of Roscoe Village) and I am surrounded by families. Many of the residents with children love this neighborhood and say this and Roscoe Village are perfect for people wanting to raise a family who don't want to move to the suburbs. Just a suggestion.
