It's a state university, that means it's cheap.

Maybe not so much for an immigrant on a student visa. What are the residency rules for such a person? He may end up being stuck with out-of-state tuition for the duration of his studies. At a minimum, he'll be paying it for a year, unless he a) is permitted to establish state residency, and b) waits until such residency is established before enrolling in school.

It is cheap and an OK school. I would advise to be careful however in that part of town. It is not the Loop. If you want even better and cheaper, consider attending your first 2 years at the City Colleges of Chicago. Chicago has one of the best City College systems in the country and they are really cheap. That is what I did. One thing about Chicago is that it offers every kind of educational opportunity you could ever want (except an affordable law school).

The area around Chicago State is actually pretty nice for a city neighborhood. Its all single family homes and the college has a nice, grassy campus. I think that the neighborhood is at least as safe as the loop and the campus is much prettier than any of the city college campuses, including Daley College.

I base this on having been on the Chicago State campus and in the area surrounding it.

I grew up in the area immediately east of CSU and visit quite frequently since my mother still lives there and I have to agree. It is a nice area and pretty safe for people of any color. The university has made a lot of improvements over the past decade (including a new campus police/security department building) that have made it much better aesthetically. I can't speak on the academics since I never attended.

Even if you decide not to live on-campus and out of the area (Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, or even South Loop) if you want to remain relatively close but not live in what some around here may call "bad" neighborhoods), the university is easily accessible by public transportation.

The Loop is the safest part of the city. I highly doubt the CSU area ia anywhere close...

it is? It's so barren at night it comes across as sketchy. I always feel safer with many people surrounding me.

If you want to go to a state U then University of Illinois at Chicago(UIC) or Northern Illinois University would be the ones in the area. NIU only has a six month wait for resident tuition (not sure how that works for international students) while UIC has a 12 month wait. (I would find it hard to pay out of state tuition for a state U when they don't help you much with financial aid).
