I'm just curious, compared to other large metropolitan areas what are some expenses that we pay here in Chicago that are either much cheaper or much more expensive than other metro areas?

For example I think the state income tax is lower than other states I've lived in, but the sales tax and property tax are super high.

What are some other ones, are utilities expensive here? Water bills? Vehicle registration seems quite expensive.

Property taxes are beyond super high. Here's a $300K house in Chicago, property taxes are 10,400 per year.
6723 S Constance Ave, Chicago, IL 60649 is For Sale - Zillow
Same value in a Memphis suburb, taxes are $3000 per year.
4862 Fox Springs Dr, Collierville, TN 38017 is For Sale - Zillow
Indianapolis, $2700 per year.
4804 Corydon Ln, Indianapolis, IN 46239 is For Sale - Zillow

Idk about property taxes because I just rent, but my electric bill is only like $20/mo for my 525 sq. ft apartment. I'm not sure about water or heat because it's included in rent, but I'm sure it's not much either.

Some others I thought of that are lower - retirement income (not taxed in IL) and lots of services are not taxed.

Are taxes in the CITY that high? Mine are a little over 1% for property tax, and I don't find that overly high.

Sales taxes at 9.25% are fairly high, but still lower than places like Phoenix, Seattle, San Fran and is similar to those in Los Angeles, New York City, New Orleans, etc.
