I know expats from Europe (including Switzerland!) who come to my neighborhood to shop at the sausage markets, delis, etc. Meanwhile, what has been growing in popularity that's "homegrown" are the Dollar Stores. So, I'm not sure if I buy that 3rd World connection at all.
