Is is possible to get a studio apartment in Chicago for under $400 a month?

I suppose if you are willing to a call the closet under someone's staircase a studio apartment and your "landlord" some idiot on airbnb that says in Chicago-ese "studio means shared bathroom" then sure anything is possible, but realistically NO

It's possible, but very rare. Here's one:

Studio for Rent

You'd be better off getting a bigger place with roommates if your budget is $400. Any studio at that price is going to be pretty horrid, I'm afraid.

Very rare, otherwise what Chet says is kind of true. I have friends renting out rooms in areas for under $400 part of larger apartments, and it's essentially a closet with enough room for a bed, a small dresser, and a tall plastic organizer with drawers. This happens in NYC and it does happen here too but not nearly as much. Probably not legal anyway..

Not in any neighborhood any sane person would purposely live in.

If you're male, maybe try getting an SRO at the YMCA or something.

I wouldn't recommend that unless you're really, truly, desperate.

Exactly. Based on that location, that place is probably terrible.

The only time I paid less than 400, actually less than 300 was when 2 of my friends and I shared an $800 2 bedroom that had a patio, which I used as a bedroom. Very cold in there.

Then in Uptown in 2008-2009, I had a studio for $535 that was decently sized. In the same building they had a studio less than half the size of mine, for $425. Not sure the square footage of that $425 one, but the whole apartment was about the size of a bathroom.

G'Luck.
