If you look up any off the major property management groups in Chicago on yelp, they're pretty much all going to have terrible reviews. Partially because a lot of them are terrible and partially because people are going to be much more likely to write a review if they had a negative experience rather than a positive or middle of the road experience.

Yes i read those review sites. I actually lived in several buildings which got horrible reviews, (and I am picky) and I enjoyed them. Ironically I did notice some comments that were true of the buildings and I said, yep I know about that one. But some were comments like "Horrible - stay away" and I have no idea where that came from unless it was a disgruntled tenant that even Donald Trump could not provide a nice place for them. So it is hard for me to see if they are disgrunted tenants, or reasonable tenants. I like to check apartments out my own self, keeping in mind to look for some of those things people are alleging. I actually went to a particular building and talked to 6 people at random who were either sitting on their balcony or walking from the building and I got one nay and 6 yays. but i saw for myself.

by the way, i went to one apartment building in question and i admitted these particular reviews. The manager said yes that was a previous tenant that we were having a lot of trouble with. So i would actually present the complaints to the manager and see what they have to say about it. You can tell a lot by the way they answer - honestly, or trying to cover up the complaint, or whatever the answer.

a lot of things can be avoided if people rented apartments like a professional transaction, and also got everything in writing and also the tenant is responsible not to act like a jackass and be entitled,, the landlord is expected to take care of the place reasonably and not act like a jackazz when presented with problems that need attention.
