I never lived there. The area is called Uptown. It used to be sort of run down but the people there finally got rid of Alderman Axelrod and elected Helen Shiller who did a really great job of fixing up things there. Truman College anchors the community and offers alot too.

A lot of the cleaned up part of Uptown is actually in the 48th ward. Much of the 46th Ward (Shiller's) is still a pit and Shiller isn't exactly a constituent favorite because many believe she intentionally keeps it that way to get the "poor" vote. She's a very polarizing figure there.

That area is a very mixed bag. You'd be wedged right in the center of some of the city's nightlife areas: Wrigleyville, Boystown and Uptown, particularly around Lawrence & Broadway. You'd be within easy walking distance of all three of them. But the Broadway corridor from Irving Park to just south of Lawrence is still pretty run-down and there's still a lot of shady characters hanging around in that area. Meanwhile, directly to the east is the Buena Park neighborhood where you'll find million-dollar-plus homes, some belonging to famous people such as Studs Terkel and former governor and still influential state GOP power broker Jim Thompson. (He has a big state building downtown named after him.) You really couldn't pack more variety into one small area than right around the intersection you're talking about.

As for parking, it would be a little tight in that area, but probably not impossible.

I lived about 2 blocks from that area. As Drover mentioned, it is mixed. I felt completely safe on my block, but traveling up past Montrose would be a bit shady at times. Right around where you are looking should be fine. You are close to a lot of nightlife. I would just walk down Sheridan to Wrigleyville. Overall, I liked the area. Regarding parking, I get super frustrated with street parking, so I ended up renting a space from a private lot (my apartment also did not have parking). My roommate, however, parked on the street.
