I found a reasonable apartment in this area, and was wondering about the safety. Are the busses/train safe coming from this area to downtown and back? What about at night? And also walking around this area?

IMO the area is fine. The red line is right there which runs 24/7. It's also near Andersonville which has a decent number of good restaurants and bars.

The area is fine, there are some nice new apartments right by there, and there is a nicer Dominick's right at the corner of Sheridan and Foster. I agree with the previous poster about the 147, too...very convenient to get to/from downtown.

Forgot about the 147, it is great for getting to Gold Coast, Streeterville, Loop, etc. From Streeterville going north though the last time it runs for the night is like 10:40-10:50pm. Luckily you are near the Red Line and that's 24/7.

Used to live right around there

If you board there around foster and marine, you will be, barring LSD jams, like 15 minutes away from downtown via the 147 express (as others have mentioned)

Really that area, between red line and various express buses, is one of the best for public transit

Safety is standard residential Chicago/big city. Use common sense and you should be absolutely fine. It can get a little dicey about 6 blocks south but you will be fine there as the area has improved markedly over the last 10 years

I used to leave near there on Foster and Marine. Nice area in my opinion. Very walkable.

Marine Drive is a very beautiful street and safe, all the way from Irving to Foster. Nice Lincoln Park there also. If I were to choose an apartment, I would rather enjoy being north of Foster, only because the surrounding streets are nicer part of Edgewater. But all that area is nice to live in. That Dominics is a MUCH better one than the previous one that got replaced with the current one!

You can also get a seat on the bus there too.. which is nice, several bus lines go express down Lake Shore Drive.

I agree Marine is beautiful - great to jog, go to the park, walk, take your dog to the dog park and is safe for that. It is also somewhat safe for your car, although I have had issues on Marine with both of mine. Just saying.
