What are these neighborhoods like in terms of diversity, walk-ability, safety, and ease of walking to grocery stores, and shops?

Wicker Park/Bucktown
Lakeview

Not good for diversity. (The neighborhoods you appear to be looking at based on this and other posts of yours are the completely wrong ones for diversity.)

Good for the other criteria you listed, though walkability varies depending on the part of the neighborhood, obviously.

Why do people say these places aren't good for diversity. Lakeview has a huge Jewish community, an enormous, world-reknowned gay community, people of blue collar and white collar professions, a large number of transplants of different ethnic and racial backgrounds, 8-10 percent Hispanic, 8-10 percent Asian (different sites have different numbers)... It goes on and on. People of different income levels also live there.

So is the deal-breaker that there isn't a huge black population? Is that really the only difference between a diverse community and one that's not?

I was going to say, Lakeview has a ton of white people, but at least walking around there is a ton of diversity on the streets for the most part. At least in its eastern half with Boystown, as that attracts all walks of life.

Thanks for looking those up. In other words, Lakeview is significantly less diverse than the national average, while Chicago as a whole is significantly more diverse than the national average. No surprises there.

These figures don't include people who do business in that neighborhood, have friends in that neighborhood, and generally walk around in that neighborhood.

As for bucktown being diverse. I worked in Bucktown 2 years 2011-2013 and I saw all different people there all the time. Who the hell counts.

I assumed when the OP was inquiring about diversity, he/she meant diversity of the people who actually live there. That's generally what that means. If I misunderstood, I stand corrected.

The parts of Lakeview (like Lakeview East and on up) near Uptown are actually fairly diverse in my experience. There's a fair amount of diversity in the shops too there. It's definitely less homogeneous than other parts of Lakeview.
