Hi everyone. I am really confused right now.

I am moving to the 7500 block of N. Damen ave in Rogers Park and I keep getting mixed reviews on the area. Some say it's bad, some say it's good, some say I should question my safety.

If you have lived in this area, have friends in this area, and currently live there now, can you PLS give your best advice to me and information you have on what I should prepare myself for because I am getting nervous.

Should I make sure I'm in the house by dark? Are there lots of gangs over there? Can you refer me to a frequent user who lives there who can help me?

I lived in RP/West RP for ten years - around Newgard & Devon, Chase & Jarvis, Ashland & Wallen, then Leavitt & Devon. So I know the area While I do know one person who lives right there and loves it, I would not personally live there. It can be rough. Prior to the bubble bursting there were some condo conversions happening, but I'm guessing those didn't make it, judging from the rest of RP. A friend who lived there ended up breaking her lease after one of her neighbors was beaten with a baseball bat (bat attacks were a thing in RP for a while - are they still happening?).

This is...not what you want to hear. I'm sorry. Maybe some other posters who actually live there can offer more encouraging words. But for my part, I would not live there, when there are better areas of RP to choose from.

7500 N. Damen, that's just south of Howard. That area was a bit sketchy already back in the 80' s.

Read the blog called The Broken Heart of Rogers Park, for some interesting news about the neighborhood.

Default Concerns...

...about a Chicago neighborhood with one (1) homicide, this year?

Community Areas - Rogers Park - Tracking homicides in Chicago - Tracking homicides in Chicago | RedeyeChicago.com

Fact of the matter is, between January 1, 2013 and February 26, 2013, the 24th Police District was the only police district in Chicago in which no one was shot. In that same eight week period, the 24th District reported fewer crimes than all but one of Chicago's 22 police districts.

I wouldn't live there. Not worth the risk, even if some say that risk is minimal (which it's not). I would sacrifice a bigger place in RP for a smaller, maybe less convenient, maybe a little more $ for something in Andersonville, Linc Sq, Ros Vil, LP, LV.

That part can be a bit sketchy. South of Morse and East of Sheridan would be the best area. If you already signed a lease then I would just make sure you are in by dark.

It's fine. There are far more problems northeast of there on Howard. That area of Damen and Rogers may have the occassional drug deal or fight, but it probably isn't in the top 200 of most dangerous spots in Chicago. I wouldn't live there because it is too far from the train. Personally, I would suggest you look east of Clark St and near the Red Line if you have to have Rogers Park. Near the Morse stop is slowly becoming an interesting area. Anywhere in Rogers Park just requires common sense.......don't walk home alone at 3am waving $1,000. What is your price range because there are areas near your friends that are much more accessible to the rest of the city.
