Is Chicago a good place for a singer/songwriter? I have seen the opportunities for people who are established bands with fans to play in Chicago but what about someone starting out? Is this a good city for this? If it is, is there a network of songwriters? Are there places to play? What would you say is the best area to live in if you are a songwriter? If not Chicago do you recommend a different city?

What kind of music? My son is in a band that writes its own songs and plays gigs all the time. Do you perform?

Chicago is a great place for singer/songwriters. There are a lot of venues that cater to and support local musicians. If you're less established, there are a ton of open mic nights that are perfect for networking and building up a repertioire of material.
If you're on Facebook, there is a group called Chicago Songwriter Alliance. That's a good place to start participating in conversation, etc. with fellow songwriters. Many of my fellow songwriters are part of that group.
As far as neighborhoods, most of the musicians I know live in Logan Square, Wicker Park, and Ukrainian Village.. Some in Northeast Humboldt Park, Avondale and Pilsen as well.
So, yes, it's a great city to be a singer/songwriter in! There is a lot of opportunity, you just need the talent and the drive (be willing to hustle!) to make the most of it!
Good luck!
