Old Town consists of two areas, one north of North Ave and very affluent and completely safe, and one south of North Avenue which, while improving, has kind of a trashy look. I would still be somewhat careful walking around the southwestern quadrant of Old Town (west of Wells and south of North Avenue) late at night but I suspect that safety has improved in that area too.

There is some trouble west of Wells, there are quite a few mixed housing projects over there and not infrequent shootings and drug trafficking. At least one person was killed there earlier this year.

Some characters - single "mother" types - in subsidized housing just south of the Sedgewick brown/purple line are always fun, especially when they're screaming at each other and their kids (the older ones seem eager to imitate these role models), throwing out the n-word in public, that kind of behavior. There are some projects there, including one across Eva's Cafe.

Mother is quoted because I don't really consider a woman screaming obscenities at her children much of a mother. And I've seen quite a few examples of that by there/along Sedgewick.

Plus there's been some trouble by that food mart and closed checks cashed store with some hoodlums harassing passerbyes and blocking entrances. Nothing too serious, but it's not exactly an endearing feature of the neighborhood.

THe areas north of North Avenue are quite nice, and actually almost "tranquil" in sections, even though they're in the middle of the city; nice to stroll around before/after a Second City performance..
