I've lived in Rogers Park for three years now and I love it. I'm about two blocks from Loyola's campus and I've never felt unsafe. As others have said, it does get less nice around Clark--not necessarily unsafe, but just a little dirty looking. And really how many Mexican joints can you stack on top of each other? If there's one area of RP that isn't that diverse, it's probably Clark St.

Pros
1. Cheap rent/mortgage--more bang for your buck than any other neighborhood I've lived in (Buena Park, Lakeview, Old Town and Logan Square).

2. Close to the red line, a Metra stop and Lake Michigan--I love the fact that I can walk two blocks and be on the beach.

Cons
1. It's pretty far north. This doesn't really matter that much to me because I work in the north burbs and I probably only go downtown twice a month. Still, it's not that bad, especially if you are close to the actual stop.

2. Not many great restaurants or bars. I think this is probably the biggest downside. JB's has solid pizza, but other than that, there really aren't many standout restaurants or bars at all. Edgewater has a few good spots close by: Dak, M. Henry, Nookie's and the Andersonville/Clark St. But yeah, Rogers Park really doesn't have that same type of destination corridor.

Overall, I think it's a great hood, especially if nightlife isn't that important to you and being close to the red line and the Lake is.
