Consider this...most people work 5 days a week. How many days a week are you going to see your gf? If your answer is only a few and not 7 then it might make more sense to live closer to work especially considering winter weather. If the gf is willing to ride that Metra train downtown that might help you out unless you are always going to her place. You have a lot to consider here; just trying to give you something to think about. I would not want to do what you are considering!

Is Metra an option, even to get to RFU? Great Lakes station appears to be less than a mile from RFU, but that's "as the crow flies." I have no idea if it's walkable. or if RFU has a shuttle.

I hate to say it but this looks like driving for both of you is the best option, unless that "last mile problem" from the train station to RFU can be solved. Will she be taking night classes? You're going to pick her up from the train station in Chicago, right?

Maybe a far NW side city neighborhood, or Des Plaines/Park Ridge splits the commute and gives easy access to 294.

OP, what is your max drive time your willing to do? How much are you looking to buy/rent a property? Near North Chicago I'd try Gurnee, Libertyville, Grayslake, Vernon Hills, Antioch.

Please tell me you're not suggesting that he live way up north and drive all the way down to Lemont? That's just not feasible.

The OP asked for suggestions of places to live near North Chicago. He was just answering the question that was asked.

Park Ridge is doable. It all depends on this guys' tolerance of how long he's willing to sit in a car.
