due to massive school bills, I can't afford to go visit my family in Boston this Thanksgiving (actually, my sister did offer to pay half of the amount, but I don't get much time off from class, plus I'll have lots of homework due, so it just didn't make since to pay almost $500+ on a plane ticket to spend less than 72 hours w/ the family and deal w/ the airport madness and worry about doing homework)

anyhoo, I don't know anyone in Chicago well enough to crash their family dinner, so I'm looking for some suggestions on what to do that day. I'd definitely be interested in volunteering somewhere (I'm cool working w/ kids, the elderly, the homeless, animals, whatever). any agencies I should look up that might need help that day? anyone know if what will be open that day and what won't (besides the movies)? anyone in the same boat as me?

If you'll be away from your family, and without too many close friends to share the evening with, something great to do would be to volunteer at a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter. You'd be amazed at how much fun you'd have, rewarding you'll find it, and you'll be able to relate to those there in that they otherwise have no one to share such days with.

Default volunteer

I am actually in a very similar position and have been trying to find a place to volunteer. I haven't been able to find anything too promising yet though..If I do I will post it..

Might be too late for Thanksgiving, but the need is greater over the next weeks/months. If you are serious about this there are great organizations that have been around for decades. The orientation is to make sure they do not get some whacko and ruin things for the volunteers OR the needy: How to Sign Up to be a Volunteer - Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly Chicago Chapter

Family willing to volunteer during Thanksgiving Tuesday-Friday in City of Chicago. I have two kids who are 11 and 14. Does anyone know a place where kids that age can volunteer. I have noticed many of the opportunities have an age 16 minimum.
