First, you are way over generalizing how the police behave around those communities. Second, at least the police are trying to make their neighborhoods habitable and safe; that's more than I can say for many of the inhabitants. Third, the police aren't the ones shooting each other every day and night, but all hell breaks loose on the rare occasion when they are by race baiters; and fourth the police are in an impossible position of trying to keep the peace in neighborhoods where many angry residents frankly don't want it. At least the cops are trying, whereas residents don't do more than neighborhood vigils and finger pointing towards the police,Rahm, and the productive portions of Chicago.

This might be a little off topic, but does anyone know where I can buy some food stamps?

Over generalising may be your perception, but its certainly not to the massed of people who've been at the hand of it. Nt all police are abusive, and some, especially the few that live in these communities, truely want to helps, but plenty see it as going to where "the animals" are. some residents do want more police, many dont trust them, again it goes back to how theyve been treated as a community. If Rahm gave a damn about these communities, why are there more cops per capita in Lake View than Austin? Does he turn on the TV at night, see all the shootings, assaults, rapes etc... In these communities and say, hey, places like Austin need fewer cops. Notice Rahm didn't even start to address the problems in Austin until a cop was shot there, then suddenly he was all about stopping the violence there, and now that that news has blown over he's been pretty quite on that front.

How do you know residents don't do anything other than vigils? There are many anti violence efforts and developmental program's to offer activities for kids to get off the streets in many of these areas, the problem is money and resources are limited. These are the people who are trying to change these communities, not the mayor. The cops come along when the bodies start to fall, and to tackle some crime, but a lot of it goes unaddressed.

You want to talk about over generalising? You make it sound like the majority in places like Austin are criminals and dysfunctional members of society, when its the opposite.

But the guns are there because a gun company produced them. America loves its gun rights and this is, in fact, why there are so many guns lying around.

You apply for food stanps at the DHS office. I know the south suburban office is in Blue Island.

Good article although I don't agree that an $11.50 an hour job in Chicago requires going to the outter suburbs with 20 years experience. But the fact is large cities with high cost of living, bad schools and high crime are not good places to be poor in. Especially if you have kids. A bad neighborhood in Minneapolis is still much cheaper and safer than a bad neighborhood in Chicago is.

Well, it has to be considered that this article was written in the late 1990s. The idea, though, was that the young man in this article saw than he could do better in Minneapolis, so he left. He was able to get a better paying job and live in a better neighborhood. It was the same thing for the elderly couple who had lived in a rough area in Chicago. She and her husband found that Minneapolis was safer. This trend is already happening and has been happening. The very sad irony, however, is that some gang members found out that there was less drug competition in Minneapolis(and in Des Moines) and went there to sell drugs, and took violent behavior with this. The good thing, however, is that Minneapolis got better and the crime rate dropped after a few years.

So what do you propose we do, limit the supply of guns? I'm sure that'll work marvelously, like the time we limited the supply of illegal drugs and nobody got high anymore.
