Maybe I should have said a slightly high percentage between the two, but yes, there's a lot of people who don't give a **** either in LA. You find more of the "Look at my car" **** in LA though than here IMO.

oh fun he wants to drive in chicago for a 25 mile commute. he also doesn't think he needs a garage for his car. and he wants to pay only $1,100 rent. hahaha too funny! maybe he can read about the post about renting a storage unit to live in to be able to pay for his jag.

Why don't you get off the OP's back. $90K is not an upper class salary but it is enough for a single guy to afford one luxury. If he wants it to be a used car, so be it. I also drive a $30K used luxury car (although I waited until i was in my 50s to buy it).

I lived in Hyde Park for 6 years and unless you work at the University, you absolutely have to have a car. Otherwise you will spend a fortune on expensive and dangerous cab rides because the trains stop running early and don't come very often when they do run. Mostly you will wait for cabs, buses, and trains that never show up.

I would probably avoid a showy car because Hyde Park still does have some crime but, to each his own.

Tip to the OP: Maximize your 401(k) contribution before budgeting for a car; the ultimate luxury is not having to work for your whole life.

If the sticker price is $30K, just wait until all the Chicago taxes, etc come into play. You're looking at an additional $3k+ right there.
Also, will you have a garage both at home and work? Garage parking downtown will get pricey. Hyde Park is nice but surrounded by bad areas and your nice car could be a target for breakins if not kept in a garage.
