For future trips it ought to be clear that it makes more sense to eat in Hyde Park or some point between there and the airport and leave much less early. Btw for others it is generally both cheaper to fly Southwest and easier to use Midway when heading to/ from the south side...

If you left at 4pm you now have a bit of an idea of what lighter Chicago rush hour traffic looks like in normal weather. You were able to arrive, return your rental, eat a meal and relax before you boarded. Yours was not a bad idea for your first trip into and out of Chicago. It is never a bad idea to err on the side of caution when one is using public transportation. Residents tend to forget O'Hare has four passenger terminals, nine concourses, 182 gates, AND it is one of the busiest airports in the world, with a plane coming in or flying out every ten seconds.
