Can everybody give me some insight as far as the best high schools are WITHIN chicago. We have a budget of 1 million+ if that makes a different; however, i don't know if good schools correlate with good neighborhoods or home prices.

Default Like pretty much all urban areas in the US...

...there is a very high correlation between home prices and school quality. There are many posts that can be found to provide this info you could use the search function.

There are also reputable third parties that explain how they evaluate schools. While I am not a fan of ranking every school in some numeric heirarchy I do think a comprehensive methodology that relies on college readiness is valuable -- Methodology for evaluating America's Best High Schools

The best schools, at least high schools, are private and selective. The two best in the city are probably Walter Payton Prep (Walter Payton College Prep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) and Northside Prep (Northside College Preparatory High School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). The others are Whitney Young and Jones. Bunch of others like the Latin School. Really depends on what you're looking for, but yeah these schools are not necessarily purely based on where you live. There are good schools in the burbs too, but some of the ones I listed above are better than any in the burbs.

The reality is that for public schools WITHIN Chicago there are really ONLY selective admissions desirable high school.. For purely "local attendance boundary based" elementary schools there are some well liked schools.

I agree for the most part, but there are some "normal" schools that aren't magnet or selective within Chicago that have rated decently before. However, the OP might just be one of those people willing to pay $$ for the great private schools. Who knows.

I'm not the OP, but I have been looking at school options as well for when we make the move. Currently my son is attending a private school and it costs about $17K a year. Looking at the tuition for Latin School, for example, and their tuition is $29K. That is a lot more than I'm used to paying. Is it that much better. Are there other comparable private schools in the area that cost less. Costing more doesn't mean better quality, right?

Chicago Latin School is a good school, but it's actually not rated among THE best. Usually you'll be paying for it somehow though. For example, if you go to the Glenview/northbrook area, there are some good schools up there, but you pay for it in your property taxes instead. It's not nearly as expensive, but you're still paying for the better teacher salaries.

while the kids aren't in high school yet--i think aiming for the best PUBLIC school would have been my best option. I'm am aware of the private schools--but, really, the public school in good areas are bad, too??? that seems really strange to me.
