We are driving from Ontario Canada to visit the MSI and other great places in Chicago. I really don't want to pay $20 to park in the MSI underground garage. Is there any on street or lot parking within 1/2 mile that would either be cheaper or free. I have no problem walking a bit to avoid paying for parking.

There's lots of free parking on the street. Try for 57th and Stony Island, across the street from the museum. Second choice would be 56th street around Hyde Park or near Cornell.

Where are you staying in Chicago? The express bus goes to the museum.

There are parking spots right next to the museum. I don't remember how much they cost, but it's definitely not $20.

Default It really is part of the experience...

...the parking garage replacced the external entrance and was paid for by generous pork barrel grants. They moved their classic "streamliner" train into the space. It is pretty cool...

I doubt there is any "free" parking south of 56th / east of Stony Island. (I mean seriously, would either the museum or the parking meter contract people leave such an obvious hole???)

There arre two-hour metered spots with "payboxes" along 55th, royal pain to run out there every couple of hours and no guarantee that you will get a spot when you move... Small number of "pay & display" spaces along Colombia SE of the musuem, I think those are $2/hr....

... and there are no 'resident only' parking areas in Hyde Park. I just came from 56th and Cornell twenty minutes ago. There's free parking there and one could hit the museum with a well-tossed rock.

Careful of where you park it isnt such a great neighborhood not too far away. There used to be free parking on the Omnimax side of the museum which has a big park connected to it. Not sure if I'd leave me car on Stony Island for any length of time.
