Whenever I scan the Chicago FM all I hear is 30+ year old songs from Boston, Elton John, Air Supply etc.. Does no station play current pop music? I can't even name any current popular bands. How do most find new music??

FM radio is older, so older people listen to it, and they want their music.

Why aren't you complaining you can't get Lady Gaga on wax cylinders? Because the technology changes, that's why, and contemporary music has ALWAYS been primarily on contemporary mediums. Radio is not a contemporary medium.

It is funny though. Different regions of the country seems to have its time warp fall back on some sort of rock FM format. In Chicago, it's 70s stadium rock (which Chicago had a lot of bands involved with). Further south in the MW, 80s metal/rock gets more play: GnR, Van Halen, etc.

You do hear a ton of REO, Cheap Trick, Styx, Boston, etc in Chicago.

The two Is ...Ipod and Internet ... is why FM is not the conduit for newer music. it once was. Lots of music is listened to via streaming services ( Pandora) , or through the personal devices .. Auto companies started integrating iPod integration into all levels of autos, and lots also have XM which has the dedicated channels .. If you don't use these, and want to sample some new music, college radio stations are usually OK , but typically have lower power, so you need to be closer to the station .

Are you serious? 101.9, 103.5. and 96.3 all play the same top 40 garbage over and over.

Depending on where you are, you may get local pop stations like Star 96.7 in Joliet and the southland.

It is true though; to get access to really great stuff, you're going to need the internet on your phone or in the car. The only local station I really like is XRT, as they play a good mix of older stuff, plus newer rock. Otherwise, I'm on Pandora or other internet music streaming stations. Once you discover that there is a whole new world of great music that isn't getting played, you'll hardly go back to FM.

WBEZ (NPR) and XRT are the only FM stations in Chicago worth a listen that I've found. Otherwise that's what CDs and the internet (plug your smart phone into your car stereo) are for.

I can't name any current bands because I've reached the age where I could care less about pop culture ( actually reached that age quite a while ago). If this makes me a little out-of-touch, I don't mind.

However, I never want to hear the Eagles "Hotel California" again in my lifetime.

Not all current bands = current pop culture.

Except, for some reason, 101.9 only plays songs that have been around at least 4-8 months and have already been played out by the other two stations listed here.

Just adjust your tuner and you'll find a broad range of music on the FM band. It's there. Also, what you hear is what the listeners want and advertisers are willing to pay for to reach those listeners. A lot of research is done on this.
