As it goes west it goes through some hoods that are considerably less affluent than Bucktown. NYC has one of these as well and they say it's been a great success. I'm really excited to see this happen.

For those who are interested, there is also a Facebook group that is a good resource for keeping up on the progress and/or if you are part of the community and want to be involved.

This project has taken far too long. The last train ran on those tracks in 2004.

Work on the park at Milwaukee and Leavitt is scheduled to start "any day now", and work on the trail itself should start in July. There's a good update here.

I saw a group running along the trail the other day and was reminded about this project since I love the Highline in NY. Hope things start picking up soon.

Right, but that's why the project is taking so long - with no trains running the infrastructure/viaducts were allowed to just slowly fall apart.

This is why the railroad was so eager to give away (aka unload) the real estate, it was a liability in terms of safety.

The City, in a rare case of intelligence, actually did its homework and got some concessions from the railroads before they would agree to take over the property.

It will! My former architecture professors son is actually the one who has spearheaded the whole thing and organization. A few years back that professor actually had us create our own designs for the Bloomingdales trail. Some of the designs were awesome! Crazy stuff. One student had all these wacky slides that would come down from the trail.

Definitely looking forward to this project!

I remember that from some of the early meetings. I think the slides were put at Kimbell (pretty sure they've since been removed from the plan). Personally, I think slides would be fun, as long as they were big enough for "kids" of all ages to use them.

Some of the early plans were quite out there, like having concert space (imagine the neighbors reaction to that), and putting in ponds to fish from.
