This is actually at least partially true of a lot of expensive places, If you go and sit at the bar and have a couple appetizers, there are many fancy places you can get a taste at without breaking the bank.

Default More Suggestions....

Pizano's for pizza on State street.....really good pizza...small place...gets croweded, so go early or be prepared to wait

Grand Lux Cafe - Michigan & Ontario...similar menu to Cheesecake Factory

Bandera - Michigan avenue....535 N. Michigan avenue.....similar menu to Houston's.....

Capital Grill....over near the Northwestern Campus....steak & italian

Francesca's on Chestnut......Italian....

Rosebud Prime.....steak & italian

A short cab ride will get you infinite more opportunities to enjoy a wonderful meal in Chicago. Greektown nearby....Little Italy......

Opentable.com is a great resource for making free reservations, and getting a good sense of what's nearby.

Have fun, and enjoy!

Not to be rude, but most of this list is average to worse in terms of food quality and bang for the buck. Francesca's and greektown are good options out of this, the rest is way overpriced tourist stuff.

Yeah, it's amazing really at some places. Actually at Le Colonial which I mentioned...they have fried rice you can get for under $10 with chicken or shrimp, and it's the size of an entree. Put some chili paste/sauce on it and it's awesome stuff.

But yeah, order like 5 appetizers at a fancy place if you don't want cheesecake factory portions and you're set for under or ~$30 pp.

Somebody who goes to the trouble of researching where they are going to eat before they leave for their vacation, probably wants something better/more unique than standard chain fare. There are sooooooo many great restaurants in Chicago that are unique.
