Hi Everyone,

I found a place in the Lakeview area, very close (maybe too close, probably going to be hearing it all night) to the Red Line L, priced $800 w/ utilities with a roommate. The place online looks ok, the room doesn't look too small although the kitchen looks pretty outdated. I'm just wondering if this is kinda expensive, cheap, in the middle for the area?

Currently I live in one of the cheapest cost of living college towns in the country...me and my roommate pay $330 inclusive and we can walk to class. So I feel like I have a bad judgment of how much other places, especially Chicago, should cost.

Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Do those utilities include cable and internet?

I think it seems high.

Edit: I'd just get a studio of your own if you're going to pay that much to live with a stranger who might or might not be an ass.

Chicago is expensive (at least, Lakeview/LP is). There is high demand to live here; it is going to be a lot more expensive than living in a college town.

I have lived in lakeview for almost 10 years, and I would say that the average 1-bedroom in an upgraded condo-quality type of unit runs $1000/month, per bedroom, give or take, based on the quality of the unit. So if you are living in an older unit, then I would say $800 is reasonable.

Yes, $1600 2 bedroom, internet is yes, I'm not sure about cable.

I am looking at studios, and some of them are around the same price (maybe a little more) but most seem to be farther from the L. I don't need to be near the L ( I think), but it just seems really convenient and Chicago-y.

Basically I work downtown, so commute time is #3 on my list (#1 safety #2 price) , and the Lakeview area seems to hit all these.

This doesn't entirely help the OP find a specific place to live, but as it relates to pricing I'm just not sure I can agree with you SmartGXL. I mean hell, here's a three bedroom across the street from Wrigley for $1,500: Across From Wrigley Field/ 3 Bedroom and here's a 2 bedroom in the Southport Corridor with a dishwasher for $1,350: 1100ft² - ***TOP FLOOR 2 BEDROOM AND 1 BATH W/HARDWOOD IN SOUTHPORT AREA***

Don't rule out living closer to the lake because its farther from the red line. Not only are there some affordable studios or 2 BR places, but express busses are plentiful, and generally much more pleasant than the brown/red line (which, by the time you'd be getting on, will be packed during morning commutes).

I live in the area, $1600 2bed seems like it might be a tad high, but nothing outrageous. A really nice 1bed will go for that price, so a less than modern 2bed isn't too crazy. The 3bed I used to live in was $750 a person. Not too far off really.

As mentioned by Jiddy, express busses work well. I take them to work every day down lakeshore. It's nice being near the L, it's also really nice being close to the lake and park.

That really isn't worth it because when I was roommate searching, there was a person looking for a roommate in the Printer's Row (near Millenium Park, red line extremely close by) area for around $600 a month.

Try searching/putting an ad on Craigslist. I'd DOUBT you'd find something like $330 a month unless there's like 49797437034890 people living a house but it doesn't hurt to try.

chicago rooms & shares classifieds "lakeview" - craigslist

chicago rooms & shares classifieds "lincoln park" - craigslist

There's a start.

I know Lakeview & Lincoln Park are great areas but daaaammnnnn, make sure the shared unit is completely worth all that money you'll be spending monthly.
