I have an Amtrak layover so I decided to extend it a 2nd night, any good ideas for a laid back downtown hotel? Price is not an issue, but I won't be dressed for anything fancy or businessy. Thinking of the Hard Rock, anything else comparable?

Um, I don't know of many hotels that have dress codes, haha, but I suppose that "fitting in" is an issue.

There is a Hostelling International affiliate downtown. May be just the vibe you're looking for. And cheaper too, though apparently you don't care about that.

The Chicago incarnation of the Hard Rock is way over at Michigan and Wacker Drive -- Chicago Loop Hotels | Hard Rock Hotel Chicago - Directions | Hotels on Michigan Ave Chicago

There are A LOT of notes MUCH closer to Union Station, from the hip nightclub-ish W in the "City Center" -- Downtown Chicago Hotels: W Chicago - City Center
To the "all executive" JW Marriot across the street: Downtown Chicago Luxury Hotel: JW Marriott Chicago, a Luxury Hotel in Downtown Chicago, Illinois
Also cool places like the Blake in Printer's Row: Chicago Restaurants Downtown | Wyndham Blake Hotel | Illinois (http://www.hotelblake.com/restaurant-lounge/index.cfm - broken link)
The Burnham is a lot more charming, right on State St -- The Luxury Hotel Burnham in Chicago, IL
