All this talk about the parade coming back has me wondering what I missed out on by not going before. It seems like a lot of fun to me, because I still enjoy the crazy drunken environment. Is it really that bad with fights and people throwing up everywhere? How is that any different than st. pattys day in Lincoln Park and Lakeview?

The couple times I went it was controlled mayhem, but that was several years ago. I get the feeling there will be a much stronger police presence and they will be cracking down on the things that used to make it "fun." I attended in the era when police had gotten to the point of flat-out ignoring open alcohol/drinking yet the event hadn't blossomed into the near-riot with mass arrests that it had devolved into by the time it was shut down. In order to make sure there's not a repeat of the latter, I strongly suspect they'll crack down on the former.

Oh i'm excited. This will be my first st. patrick's day. I live in Beverly. My cousin said it wouldn't be the same as the past ones where public drinking will be common.

I'm thinking of making the trip down, from my friends in the south suburbs they say it was a blast and less touristy/cliche and more of a neighborhood parade.

That may have been the case decades ago, but there came a point where the south side parade routinely drew more attendees than the "touristy" downtown parade and had actually become one of the most attended St. Patrick's Day parades in the world. It's true that it's more of a neighborhood parade in that it takes place in an actual neighborhood; but certainly only a fraction of the 300,000+ attendees who showed up in its latter years actually lived in the area.

It's been a long time since it was a neighborhood parade. It's probably best tourists like you (and North Siders like me) stay away and leave them alone down there.

The South Side Irish parade is in the Beverly neighorhood which still has a very signicant Irish population.

There's also a far less-ballyhooed parade on the NW Side....
