Yeah I just read about 2 guys being murdered about a block away from where I was looking (Sheridan and Howard). So that's out.

Why is this gang fight going on though?
A big reason is that typical gang territory is being taken AWAY from gangs. The people of Rogers Park and Edgewater are standing up to gangs and calling 911 and not tolerating their presence. If you really want to know whats going on then read Everyblock Rogers Park.

Yes Howard is a battle ground, if you walk down Howard during the day and when people are around generally you will be okay. I can certainly understand anyones hesitation at using the Howard Station. I myself have avoided the el entrance on Howard street on occasion because of the people loitering there.THe entrance by the buses on Paulina is generally safer. But it is a mistake to count Howard out. Steps are being taken to make it better, its been yarnbombed, derelict buildings have been knocked down, a streetscape is in the works, the police and aldermand are aware that the residents dont want this violence there or the gangs. It is entropy backwards, Howard fell to the pits, about as far as you can fall, so unsuprisingly it is taking a bit to rebound.

I myself saw drugdealing in the open while waiting for a train there outside the Howard theatre building, but supposedly the owner is taking steps to stop that.
