I am in the process of applying for a job off Michigan ave. I am from Florida and have lived here my whole life. I am 25 and would be relocating with my girlfriend, 2 year old daughter and 125 yellow lab. I am looking for a pet friendly area that is reasonably priced to rent for the 1st year and then am going to look to buy a house after that. Any suggestions on areas to rent that allow large dogs? Also what areas would you suggest for buying a house. We are over the party stage but enjoy going out for a drink at night or a nice dinner. We both have cars now but willing to get rid of them if they are not needed. We are looking for a house around $300k and do not want more than a 30 minute commute. Any help would be great!

There are apartments in many neighborhoods that allow dogs (of course, some don't allow dogs at all and others have a pound limit). The neighborhood you pick to rent will depend on your price point. What size apartment (1 br/studio/2br) will you be needing and what is your price range for monthly rent?

A lot of folks enjoy renting in the city on the northside. For example, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Edgewater, or even up to Rogers Park. Those areas are close to the park that runs along Lake Michigan and there are lots of trails for dog walking, etc. One bedrooms in many highrise buildings in those areas are 1100.00 to 1500.00 per month. In a vintage courtyard type building you can find something 1000.00 to 1300.00. Edgewater is cheaper and Rogers Park is the cheapest of those I mentioned. If you are planning to live in the city you will probably want to ditch the cars. Parking is expensive and most apartments don't include it (or if they do it is 125.00 to 200.00 per mo per car).

You could also consider living in a suburb but since you want to be within 30 minutes of Michigan Avenue that will be difficult to find as most are a greater commute.

Another possibility is Wicker Park/Bucktown. In the very first thread on this forum called "Got questions about Chicago start here" you can find lots of good info: https://www.city-data.com/forum/chica...tart-here.html

Good luck to you.l

Not my favorite part of the city, but definitely within 30 minutes of a job on N. Michigan Ave, there are some decent opportunities in Bridgeport for fixer-upper / decor challenged type places, schools are a downside unless you go with private or magnet options, but you have several years to work out those details --
