I don't know, if you like to ski, you like to ski. I like the West just as much as the next guy, but I also like skiing more than once a year. Galena and the southern wisconsin hills at least provide that. You just set your expectations accordingly.

I still haven't been to Granite Peak, but will probably make a weekend up there this year. Anyone know how that compares to Boyne?

How about a new sport? Cross country skiing, snowshoeing. You know, something that involves flat terrain! Bowling is a popular winter activity in these parts.

Cross-country skiing? Really? That is too much like work!

Jdiddy - I have been to both Granite Peak and Boyne Mountain. Both are pretty comparable in price and in the amount of runs/vertical drops. Granite is a couple hours closer than Boyne, but I would check both out if possible. Anybody have any opinions on Indianhead? I am headed there around Christmas.

Do I want to know what "Rib Mountain" refers to...

Guessing it's in the same vein as our loving nickname for Wilmot, "Mount Trashmore."

Um, no. That's the actual name. It's up by Wausau.

Granite Peak (previously Rib Mtn) and UP Michigan sites are probably your best options for a weekend trip without having to fly to the Rockies.

I think Granite Peak has the most runs/vertical, but due to lake effect UP Michigan gets the best powder in the area (great for snowmobiling trips also). The UP's Powderhorn lodge burned down last year so I'm not sure what the status of that hill is? Anyone know? The only other UP option is Indian Head, so that is where I'd go.

I think Indianhead is now the best option in our area. Granite peak has more ice/less snow base and is more crowded than Indianhead I think. Do you know if Powderhorn is still open?

Also, UP lodging options are amazingly cheap as compared to e.g. Wausau, Wisc. Helps if you can bypass the ski lodging assoc. and rent directly from the chalet owner.

Yes Powderhorn is still open..we go every year...they are re-building the lodge as we speak...they still have two of the lodges open on the sides of the hills
