Wow...this is getting a out of control (downtown areas). Look at this Trib article from today:

"A 15-year-old boy was robbed at gunpoint and roughed up by a group of seven people near the Ogilvie Transportation Center Tuesday evening, police said.

The boy was in the 100 block of North Clinton Street, on the same side of the street as Ogilvie, when he was approached by seven men or boys about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to police. One of them took out a handgun and demanded the boy's money and valuables, and another hit him in the back of the head, police said.

The robbers went through the boy's pockets and took his cell phone, a bus card and cash from him, according to a police report. The seven then fled, police said.

The boy was not seriously injured and was not hospitalized, according to police.

The robber with the gun was described as a black man about 19 years old, about 6-foot-1 and weighing about 170 pounds. He had brown eyes and black hair in dreadlocks, as well as a tattoo on his right hand, according to police.

The attacker who hit the boy in the head also was a black male teen, between 15 and 18, about 5-foot-11 and weighing about 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing dark jeans shorts and a purple shirt with the letters "ENYCE" stenciled on the front in rhinestones, according to police.

Belmont Area detectives were investigating. No one was in custody."

How could this happen 1) in broad daylight, 2) during rush hour, and 3) near the very busy Ogilvie Center?!

Cops don't see everything for one thing. Second most people mind their own business, if they see someone being mugged they quickly pass by or turn around. Not wanting to be the next victim and yeah for some reason that means most would not alarm the police.

While it is strange this happened at that time of day, it's not overly shocking. That area doesn't really seem all that heavily patrolled and by 6:30 a lot of the foot-traffic has died down. There were probably few people on the street and it's not like anyone is going to stand up to a bunch of armed thugs.

Chicago had 15,877 robberies in 2009. This means if 2011 is a typical year and Tuesday was a typical day, there were 42 other muggings, purse or iPod snatchings, stick-ups, heists or guys jumped yesterday.

This is a bit unusual right outside Ogilvie in broad daylight; but I still doubt the Tribune would have even written this up a month ago.

Not that I mind seeing this reported; we in Chicagoland have become a little desensitized to violent crime. You pretty much have to get shot to make the news in this town, and even then you don't get your own news article, they just say "x people shot overnight".

Haven't most of these recent group muggins downtown happened during daylight and in busy areas?

The more alarming thing to me about this one is that these scumbags now actually pulled a gun on the victim, where in the other recent muggins that hasn't been the case - at least according to the reports.

That's true, but it's still sort of tail end of the rush hour and it's pretty light out these days at that hour. I've been there so many times so it is very strange to hear about this.
