For all of you making snide remarks.......

Why do you think the HAVE to hire 111 FF?

There is a reason......it's nor being done just for the sake of it.

If we are all adults we should be able to answer honestly.

Because the judge said so?

Court: Chicago must hire 111 black firefighters - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_chicago_firefighters_lawsuit - broken link)

It is not like this story was just made up. I am also wondering when will they be giving out compensation for all the candidates who applied during the 90's. In any case, this a great opportunity for many African American men and women right now in the city who aspire to be firefighters.

Hopefully more than 111 qualified black candidates apply and are hired, making this ruling pointless.

I'm glad to see fairness prevail - but a word of common sense here as far "compensation" - where do you think that money is coming from? It's from the same common pot that should otherwise be addressing conditions that affect the larger community, which I'd wager is funding that is more critical for the poorer segments of Chicago.

I really can't grasp the lottery mentality people seem to have with suing the government. If you want to "punish" the City you're just punishing yourself at the end of the day with that tactic.

Put the settlement into something that will benefit the discriminated-upon group (and that isn't just black folks- I'll bet you arabs, asians and latinos are also vastly underrepresented) as a whole, not to a few individuals who at the end of the day aren't any worse off than the 90% of us who also don't have a secure government job.

why dont they just devise a test that is based on what you know and what you can physically do?

Not a bit racist but they keep taking up the issue
everyone on the application should have the name
john smith
do interviews thru a non party that is not any way shape or fashion connected with the city this way you can take out visual observations and award the jobs based on the candidates skills and merits

in reality if your burning up in a house who cares what color the person would be saving you

if you just take race out of the whole interview process it sure would alleviate problems from the start
sad
we even need to talk about this topic.

The 111 firefighters who are going to be hired are the ones who personally took that test back in 1995 and were rejected. It's not open for everyone....

I understand where it's all coming from, but it's frustrating to punish the current population because of actions made by some employees 16 years ago.
