‘Clifton’ showed how the yuppies took over West Lincoln Park - Chicago Sun-Times

I saw this film back in the '80s when I was a teacher in CPS. One of our English / humanities teachers was really fond of it.

Lots of young punks forget that long before there were folks that traded options for hedge funds snapping up place in Lincoln Park there were all kinds of other "professionals" in bad 70's polyester & glasses as big as Harry Caray unironically moving into areas that once upon a time had manufacturing jobs and kids that actually played together without having schedules cross checked via smart phone and iCalendar...

I'm not sure I've ever met anyone who thought gentrification was a recent phenomenon. What's next? Is White Flight the new crisis of the 21st century?

I went to grade school just a few blocks away starting in about 75, thanks for the link, I lived right down the street from Kartemquin and never knew they had been around that long nor of this movie.

Gentrification IMO is mostly about the eternal struggle between landowning folks and renters. Having been both I can see both sides, but it's hard to get away from the reality that at some point, housing stock gets dilapidated and needs to be rehabbed, torn down, etc.

Renters have by and large never shown either the interest or ability to actually help take care of their housing - the long-expressed and utterly incorrect notion that property owners are reponsible for shoveling snow on the sidewalk comes to mind (read the law - legal residents are on the hook for that, property owners are responsible for their property only).

So at some point property owners are faced with the rock-and-a-hard-place decision of either having unsafe properties/with a liability, or paying to fix them up.

But renters don't want to pay more rent in return, as IMO they generally massively overestimate the profit margin of rental units.

There needs to be a middle ground - and one way to get there is get crazy-*** property taxes out of the equation.

My mother sold her two-flat when the taxes were literally double what she was getting in rent, it was essentially being forced out (in that case, it was the glut of new condo construction that murdered the rental market while also contributing to escalating property values).

It ain't easy...

I am just DYING at the concept Clifton is "West" Lincoln Park... what is the latest CW, that it goes all the way to/including blinkin' Lathrop, right?

Smart phones and iCal > Rape, murder, robbery.

What part of that is confusing.

I don't think a "professional" factory worker is actually the issue with neighborhoods that have benefited from gentrification.
