I know Chicago has heavy traffic. I'm going to be working in Lincolnshire, IL, but am looking to live in Ravenswood/Andersonville/Uptown areas. What can I expect my commute to look like from a time standpoint? Should I count on over an hour or about an hour?

Also what time of the day does 90 and 94 start to get backed up, and clear up?

Over an hour. I am guessing from the map about 1 hour and 30. Rush hour in chicago is from about 6:30am to 9am and from 4pm till 6pm. 90/94 going north bound is very bad in rush and prone to random delays. Throw in snow and you could be talking about 2 plus hours.

Your commute will absolutely suck. You are looking well over an hour each way on a good day. On a bad day 2 hours. Rush hour runs from about 6AM until 7PM. The mid day traffic is horrific too.

Why not Evanston? You could easily save 20-30 minutes if you live north or northwest of downtown. Evanston is lively for a suburb and you have good access to Chicago via the CTA. You can go out and have the "green limousine" get you home after a night on the town.

Evanston is nice and you have both Metra and CTA service there but it is very expensive and property taxes there are sky high.

I did a similar commute a few years back; Ashland/Grace to Lincolnshire. I took Irving Park to Lincoln and usually got on 94 at Touhy, occasionally Peterson. It took me anywhere from 45minutes to 3hrs depending on whether and random acts of traffic. During heavy snows, I didn't even attempt 94 I took Green Bay Rd south all the way from Half Day. It's not a fun commute no matter how you slice it. If you can leave by 6am and 3pm it will help a bit.

Maybe, but I don't perceive it's any more expensive than renting in decent Chicago neighborhoods.

I actually quit a job partially because of that commute. And I lived right off 90/94 and California. Cubs games made me cry. And I remember the day I left work at 3:30 thinking I'd have a less painful commute - nope.
