And Belmont/ Central is currently the "downtown" of Polonia. Poles live everywhere in Chicago where other white people do, if there are too many non-whites in one area they move to whiter parts of the city. They also live in all suburbs (both North and South but mostly North) but not in very rich ones. Milwaukee is not Polish street anymore, now it is Belmont from Laramie to Cumberland. I know all this because I am Polish.
That's what I always tell everyone but no one listens to me.

There's still quite a bit of Polish stuff on Milwaukee but probably not the concentration there once was.

No one listens to you because everyone wants to be smarter even if they have not much to say. This is very common on this forum. Maybe because they count on reputation increase?

And yes - Milwaukee Ave (from Belmont to Diversey) was once the concentration (about 20 years ago), now this is a Mexican area, Poles ran away. This is very gloomy and littered area now.

Don't blame Mexicans for what is now known as the Polish skid row. Street drunks started to infest that neighborhood 15 years ago and now they are a total blight. Most of them are not Mexican at all.

There is still a significant Polish presence there and that is very evident from the standing room only crowds for mass at St. Hyacinth and the dozen or so Polish businesses that run from Wallys Market to Staropolska.

yep, there are few Polish bums on Milwaukee, that's true, but like I said - very few Poles live there now, only those who overstayed there due to lower rent. My gf lived there but she moved out because Mexicans still and still were hitting on her and she was always afraid of coming back home late. Belmont/Central area is much nicer.

In know this discussion has been north side only, BUT...There is a huge Polish population on the south side, a lot in Garfield Ridge/Clearing. I would say about 40% of my neighborhood is Polish. Tons of grocery stores including Bobaks, Joe and Franks, Shop and Save. Also there are some Small Polish owned business up and down Archer and 63rd. Gilmart (Archer Heights) and Bobaks both have some pretty good take out also.

It would be better if it was a Mexican area, as I live right there and I'd describe it more as a no-man's-land right now.

Lots of empty storefronts, little foot traffic outside of early on weekends when the polish delis still do a good business. When we moved to the area Ixcapulzaco (high end Mexican cuisine) was on that stretch, when it closed down it was not a good sign.

Very much like Lincoln Ave when the German shops left in the 70s and 80s, and the Mexican/Puerto Rican population left before ever establishing a retail presence.

It won't last, the location is too prime and offers access to to the subway, the bus, the highways, etc. Unfortunately what I see moving in are boutiques moving north from Logan and Wicker Park, blah.

It's not uncommon for a "concept" restaurant to only last a few years before the culinary scene has moved on, or the owner decides it's time to try something new, or decides to refresh the existing concept. The lattermost is what happened with Ixcapulzaco, which basically re-opened as Real Tenochtitlan. So if you miss the former, go give the latter a try.
