Resources like above are good, but since musical tastes vary significantly, some of those sites leave out bands that you may be really into. What I usually do is look up my favorites bands on their website (or myspace if they have one) and see when they're touring in my area. If a band just released an album, that's one of the dead giveaways that the band is or will probably be touring very soon.

Check out Chicago Reader , they will have all the local shows coming up (it is also in newspaper form in some bars and stuff usually by the front door). You can also subscribe to get emails from Jam Productions :: Concert Tickets for all Music Genres; Rock, Pop, Indie, Folk & More! which will give you most local listings as they pop up. Also check in on Metro | Chicago , one of the best venues in chicago to see a show in my opinion. You can check their calendar to see whats coming up...start with those and you should be good to go

Oh My Rockness -- Chicago's indie rock show list is good for rock bands.
Chicago Events & Concerts | Upcoming Events in Chicago, IL - Eventful seems to have a bit of everything.
Also, many of the venues have their own websites and email lists. So if you find one you really like you can always sign up for their list.

Go to Wicker Park. Flyers for upcoming shows are plastered everywhere.

Seriously, if you stand still long enough, some dude in skinny jeans will post his band's flyer directly on to your torso.

LOL, I hope he uses the paste-glue method, not staples.

Tickets for local/indie shows are typically handled by TicketWeb. If you create an account at their website, you can sign up for a weekly mailing list of upcoming shows. The Chicago Reader as listed above is probably the best resource for listing concerts for all types of music at all venues big and small. They also list other type of shows like theater company productions, jam sessions, poetry readings, etc.
