That's about as far southeast as you can go.

It might be good to differentiate different areas of Chicago in this discussion. People saying "I lived in Chicago, it's not NY, you need a car" would do well to specify what PART of Chicago. South of the loop it's probably a pain to lack a car. Many areas north of the loop are a pain WITH a car, as I understand it.

Yikes! Does this mean you're coming out of retirement? Don't do it Tom, working for a living is vastly overrated. Just ask Brett Favre.

Once in awhile I take a job when the hall is empty; the union lets retirees work a little when the local can't get enough hands. Last spring I worked a few weeks for one of my sons and my other son was in the gang too; somebody has to set the pace for these kids.

Hmmm, for some reason I doubt the OP will have much reason to ever go to 100th & Avenue G.

I think it all depends on where you live. Some neighborhoods are easy to live in without a car. I lived in Roscoe Village for most of my life and never found a need for a car. Public transportation is very convenient there. There are also several close grocery stores. I either carried my groceries home or took a "granny cart". If you have a friend with a car I'm sure they would be fine with taking you to the store once in a while to get heavy items.

It kinda depends if you live in a neighborhoods with a population density of 30k+/sq mile versus one with a population density of 5k/sq mile.
